The fact is well known that it is a Herculean task to search the Internet, for any information for the beginner The very fact that multiple websites exist, for each disease makes it more complicated to search for specific information. I would not dwell on the various advantages of Internet but focus on the practical usage of the net. I hope that this would he useful for the urologist to save time and energy.

   Introduction Top

The computer system configuration is the most important. If the configuration is right the use of the net would be optimum. There is a rapid development in the available configurations and also the software programs. The best would be outdated tomorrow. It is probably wise to seek the configuration, which is the latest on date. The optimum configuration would be hard disk drive (HDD) of 43 Gb, 32MB RAM (random access memory), 24x or more CD ROM (read only memory), 2MB or more VGA card, Multimedia kit, 33.6 kbps or 52 or 56 kbps (preferably) external modem, Flat bed scanner. Ink jet printer or any better one. Speaker, Speaker phone and lastly a Video camera if you can afford. The basic software required are Windows 3.1 or any other upgraded versions, DOS (disk operating system), MS Office 97. Internet explorer (IE) 4.0 or Netscape navigator would optimize the system.

   Web Site Top

This is the basic address or the code by which one can work on the net. This is represented by small letters only. The first letters of the website are http which stand for hypertext transfer protocol, www, world wide web, and next the name of the site which signifies the particular subject of interest. So a typical website would be written as http://www.x.com without any spaces in between the address. The last word of the syntax, i.e., com signifies that this particular site is commercial and if it is .edu it signifies education, etc. Whenever we log on Internet it is imperative that the address such as http://www.x.com should be typed in full. But in practice one need not type http:// and in some cases www. This will help simplify typing the address, as the computer will recognize the rest of the address.

   Search Engines Top

What is a search engine? This is the website through which the sites of interest can be searched. There are many search engines available on the net like yahoo.com, infoseek.com. altavista.com, etc. Of all these search engines zinternet.com searches all the search engines available on the net for the information requested. I have found this site to be of extreme help in searching for data or links for my subject of interest.

Tips To Save Time on Internet Top

While navigating through the net it is advisable to open two windows on your monitor. This saves time as one window can be viewed and the other can be used to search for required information. Thus it saves the time spent on the net and also allows us to use our time economically.

   Retrieving Information Top

If you have logged off the net or disconnected due to some problem one need not log on to retrieve the information already accessed. This is possible as all the information accessed will be stored in the temporary Internet files in the computer. This can be accessed by viewing the properties of IE and clicking on the view files bar that appears on the window.

   Conclusion Top

I have tried to give a comprehensive review of how to access information for an urologist who is on the net and also provide him with the best web sites available. This article can be updated and the person on the net may find something more exciting which is not in this article.
